History of the hall of fame

The Haliburton Highlands Sports Hall of Fame began as the dream of a group of individuals. In June 0f 2018 Scott LaRue organized a general public meeting with 30 or so in attendance to advance the idea of a Haliburton Highlands Sports Hall of Fame. There was significant interest and a committee was formed from a number of the attendees to further explore the idea. In the fall of 2019 this group became part of the Haliburton County Community Co-operative and began researching and planning for the creation of a physical space to house the Hall of Fame, create a process for nominations and inductees, research and plan for the creation of a virtual, on-line Hall of Fame, attract founding sponsors, and plan for the first induction ceremony.

Due to the limitations put in place due to COVID-19 in March of 2020, the plans for the first induction ceremony were pushed forward to the fall of 2021. The HHSHoF Management Committee continued to meet via Zoom and continued with its planning.

The HHSHoF received approval from the Municipality of Dysart et al to create the first home for the Sports Hall of Fame on the stage in the Community Hall in the upstairs of the A.J. LaRue Community Centre. The Municipality of Dysart et al agreed to provide this space at no charge and to assist with renovations through a cash and in-kind contribution.

The HHSHoF does not see this space in the long-term as a permanent home, but as a public space in a well-used public building it will serve as a good beginning.

It became apparent that the situation with COVID would not be conducive to a large public gathering in the fall of 2021 and the Induction Ceremony date was moved forward to June of 2022.

In March of 2022, the HHSHoF announced the first 17 inductees members – athletes, teams and builders – men and women in a variety of sport from throughout the past 100 years.

Approximately 400 friends, family and community members gathered in the arena of the A.J. LaRue Community Centre to welcome the inductees in the Sports of Hall of Fame. A video was created and presented about the accomplishments of each of the inductees. A reception was held following the ceremony.
