Jonathan Bishop skated his way up through the ranks of the Haliburton Huskies Minor Hockey league from Atom to Midget (1981-1994) as they racked up five consecutive OMHA championships.
An all-round athlete, he was selected Haliburton Highlands Secondary School Male Athlete of the Year in 1993 and 1995. Jonathon captained the HHSS Redmen hockey team, played in the CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Lake Placid, and represented his school for badminton at OFSAA. In 1995 he won tennis doubles with partner Kevin Morissette at the Eric Nystedt tennis tournament (the premiere tennis tournament in Haliburton).
Jonathan attended Queen’s University where he played hockey for the Gaels from 1996 to 2000. Gael’s coach, Chris MacDonald, was quoted as saying, “Jonathan’s our go-to guy. Someone who plays with tremendous heart.” He enjoyed wide press coverage for his outstanding games.
One sports reporter covering the Carr-Harris Cup in Kingston (celebrating the 140+ year hockey rivalry between Queen’s and Royal Military College) raved about Bishop’s “divine” hat trick. “An electrifying end-to-end dash past three or four Paladins finished with a low, accurate shot to the opposite corner.”
Jonathan went on to play professional hockey from 2000 to 2003 with the New Mexico Scorpions, the San Angelo Outlaws and the Knoxville Ice Bears before earning his medical degree.
Currently he is a family physician in Sault Ste. Marie where he lives with his wife, Vitra and their two children, Connor and Alexandra.
Jonathan volunteers and supports youth sports and, like many Haliburton home-towners, he loves to get out on the water for boating and fishing.
