Photos of Wendy Gough appeared on many pages in Haliburton Highlands Secondary School yearbooks of the 1970’s. She was a multi-talented athlete, participating in track and field, football, basketball, badminton, and volleyball.
At Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (now Toronto Metropolitan University) she won several awards, including the G.L. Dobson Trophy for Greatest Contribution to Athletics in 1978.
She also served as a member of her Department Council as well as the Graduating Committee. She played OUAA badminton and participated on 26 intramural teams.
Wendy sat on the President’s Advisory Council for Athletics and served as Convenor for nine intramural leagues. In 2003, Wendy was inducted into the Ryerson Athletic Hall of Fame.
Back in Haliburton, Wendy spent years on the softball circuit, playing for the Kinmount Orioles, the Carnarvon Ladies team and Minden Ladies Seniors. Wendy credits her parents for modeling active lifestyles and independence.
Wendy’s career in education started at Haliburton Highlands Secondary School where she coached several teams. She eventually became a Vice-Principal and then served as the first female General Secretary of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation.
In retirement, Wendy is committed to other kinds of teams. Wendy volunteers her time to support the Minden Legion. She recently served as Legion president and is a member of Minden Legion’s Colour Guard.
Wendy drives for Community Support Services, taking people to medical appointments. A long-time advocate for cancer care, Wendy donates her hair every four years to organizations that help those with hair loss.
